62nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations (a/k/a Suck it Leno)

The late-night wars may be on summer break until September's debut of The Conan O'Brien Show, but this morning's Emmy nominations announcement gave Conan a mini W. O'Brien's short-lived incarnation of The Tonight Show picked up a nod in the best variety, music or comedy category, while The Jay Leno Show (and Letterman's and Kimmel's) were left out. Regardless of whether Conan can edge out his competition (Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and a middling SNL), he has to be feeling pretty smug right about now.

In the best drama category, we see two office favorites here at the Phoenix pitted against one another: the dearly departed Lost and the soon to be resurrected Mad Men (season 4 premieres July 25). While both are the clear-cut favorites out of the gate, they'll be up against some stiff competition in the form of Breaking Bad, Dexter, and True Blood, along with The Good Wife, a show that I wasn't aware existed because it's on CBS and I am not in the 55-plus demographic.

Best actor in a comedy is another intriguing category. Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) are probably most deserving for their depictions of characters that are polar opposites on the confidence scale, when you think about it. But it wouldn't be far-fetched to anticipate votes for Steve Carell, who recently announced he is leaving The Office after this season, or Tony Shaloub, whose Monk went off the air in December and has already taken the award on three occasions.

HBO's WWII miniseries The Pacific and FOX's musical comedy Glee are today's big winners, raking in 24 and 19 nominations, respectively, and earning both programs the prestigious right to enter my Netflix queue.

And in case you needed more evidence of the ineptitude of reality television, chew on this fact: The Amazing Race has won the award for best reality program for all seven years of the award's existence. Between this, The Good Wife (nine noms), and The Big Bang Theory (five noms), it's clear that I need to be watching more CBS programming (... jk).

My favorite showdown? Best supporting actor for a drama, where we get the deranged Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus on Lost) facing off against silver fox John Slattery (Roger Sterling on Mad Men). I feel like a child being forced to choose between divorcing parents.
