[tonight in cambridge] Victory at Sea reunion show; debut of No Love @ Middle East
Several years ago I was dating this cool lady from Somerville who was very removed from the Boston music scene. A few weeks into our relationship, she confessed a massive love for VICTORY AT SEA, and in particular, the incredible, hypnotic voice of Mona Elliott. I went to the show, which I think was at the Middle East, and was equally impressed, and not too long after, completely fell for their track "Bored Otherwise," the standout off their final record, All Your Things Are Gone. The lush, melodic band, born from the Swirlies and Spore in the late '90s split in 2007, but this damn near-perfect gem of enchanting rock and roll stayed in my head long after their demise.
Victory at Sea are back in action tonight at the Middle East downstairs, performing a benefit show for Donna Shroupsky-Rain, who according to Boston Band Crush, is facing mounting medical bills while battling breast cancer. This could be the last time we get to see a live performance from V@S (who were thankfully around before anyone probably ever thought of shorthanding their name with an @ symbol). Hopefully it's not the case.
If it is, it will mark the end of their run but the start of another, as scene veteran supergroup NO LOVE makes its debut tonight as well, combining the talents of Cameron Keiber, Sarah Borges, Mike Joy, Ian Adams, and Victory at Sea's Mel Lederman, who pulls a double-dip. Also on the bill are Wheelers & Dealers, featuring Mary Lou Loud and Pat McGrath, and Reindeer.
Hell of a bill.
Here's hoping Victory at Sea plays "Bored Otherwise," and that they raise a fuckton of money for Donna.
