[download/stream] Local bands playing CMJ in New York this week

This weekend, thousands of bands and music industry pros are flocking to NYC for the last few days of this year’s CMJ Music Marathon -- a week of panels, parties, and shows that started on Tuesday and ends on Sunday. At this point, the official marathon only makes up a small percentage of the week’s events, with DIY and underground venues packed full of unofficial shows too. Here’s a guide to some local bands who are repping the Boston area well this year -- DEBO BAND, FAT HISTORY MONTH, EARTHQUAKE PARTY!, and more -- plus downloads and streams of music by each of them.

The Phoenix and WFNX are hosting our own showcase on Sunday at 285 Kent in Brooklyn featuring HILLY EYE, BLANCHE BLANCHE BLANCHE, SO COW, SQUAREHEAD, AVA LUNA, HEAVEN'S GATE, POTTY MOUTH, and BUTTER THE CHILDREN. More details on Facebook.

Debo Band
// Before releasing their debut full-length earlier this year with Sub Pop imprint Next Ambiance, the many members of Debo Band could be founding jamming around Jamaica Plain, where the band formed in 2006. Debo Band mixes elemnts of Ethiopian pop music with experimental jazz and klezmer sounds, featuring many singers, sousaphone, accordion, and electric/acoustic violins.

earthquake party! // Last month, one of Allston's favorite noise pop bands released their second tape, Let's Rock, OK? Like their debut tape, Vs. Pizza, it's short and punky and super catchy. It's three tracks, "Little Pet", "Hello Weirdo", and "One More Night Could Ruin Us" only take up four minutes in total. Stream the whole thing above.

Fat History Month //  Hey remember when Fat History Month's fans launched a big write-in campaign to get them in our Best Music Poll issue? If that's not a sign these dudes are worth checking out, what is? This week, Allston's favorite basement-bred scuzzy rock duo are making the trip down to NYC to play a daytime show on Saturday presented by Exploding in Sound and Gimme Tinnitus. Details on the show here.

Pile // Pile plays on that same will with Fat History Month, mentioned above.

Speedy Ortiz // OK, so Speedy Ortiz are actually from Western Mass and not Boston. (Alright, almost half the bands on this list are from Western Mass and not Boston) but that's still pretty close, and we're psyched they are repping Massachussetts well. Read the Cellars we wrote on them in May.

Potty Mouth // Western Mass garage pop 4-piece are playing the Phoenix and WFNX's show on Sunday afternoon. We're psyched. Their Sun Damage EP has been on repeat around the here for the past month, particularly the song above, "Dog Song". Download it for free and read our feature on Potty Mouth from last month.

Young Adults //  Young Adults are Massachussetts shoegaze legends. Just listen to their record.

Mean Creek // Before heading out on tour with Counting Crows again, Mean Creek are hanging out in New York for a week, where they'll likely be winning over the hearts of CMJ attendees with songs from their most recent record, Youth Companion. Read more on that album in last week's Cellars.
