Weekly Playlist #3: Endation, Magic Shoppe, Orca Orca, and Krill

Guitars are vengeful creatures. Last week’s mix was heavy on electronics, but this one is all about guitar-rock fury, kicking off with a slow-burner from reignited power duo ENDATION. The duo of Anthony "Ants" Conley (Faux Ox) and Matt Graber (Sarah RabDAU & the Self-Employed Assassins, Mascara) were making music together in ChoExperiment in the early 2000s when Endation launched as an occasional side project. They ceased operations around 2004, but return with a forceful hand this weekend with the release of The Absence of Everything, which gets the celebratory party treatment Saturday, October 6 at Radio in Somerville alongside Future Carnivores, Gene Dante & the Future Starlets, and What Time Is It, Mr. Fox. Lead track "Milkteeth" reminds us of the '90s, in a very good way.

Also on the sort-of comeback trail are reverby psych trio MAGIC SHOPPE, whose “Midnight in the Garden of Evil” highlights a very impressive online EP, Triangulum Australe. The neo-psychedelic crew released their full-length debut Reverberation last spring off Toronto-based DIY label Optical Sounds, but have been relatively quiet on the Boston front since then. Expect a few live shows to be announced by the end of the year. And do stream the entire new EP, it's pretty fucking stellar if you're into the likes of Spacemen 3, BRMC, and BJM.

Allston’s ORCA ORCA dropped two new singles as part of the Remnants EP in anticipation for their gig tonight with Denver's Tennis and Wild Belle at T.T. The Bear's Place in Cambridge, and it's another solid lo-fi post-punk effort from the songwriting mind of Jimmy Hewitt. While b-side "Swan Song" has been described by the blogs as some sort of baby-making music, we opted to go with lead track "South Carolina," which really spotlights Hewitt's dream-pop acumen.

Closing us out this week is Somerville trio KRILL, who are currently busy bringing their noisy rock across the country (warning: some dude in Minnesota hated them earlier this week). While they're spreading sonic cheer, and supplying us with the spiky "Piranha Girl," off March's Alam No Hris album, drummer Luke Pyenson has been reporting back to the Phoenix their road-food dining experiences in our newest weekly music blog series, “License To Krill.” It's as tasty as all these effing guitar chords, and you can catch up on Part 1: Intro + Plattsburg + Montreal and Part 2: East Coast romp before we post the third installment later today. << UPDATE: Part 3 is posted >>>
