[four by forty] One Night Band looks behind the curtain, Saturday @ Middle East

By now the whole idea behind ONE NIGHT BAND is well known -- take 40 Boston musicians, randomly pair up their hung-over asses early Saturday morning into groups of five, send them into nearby practice spaces and studios for a few grueling afternoon hours, and by the evening's showtime, eight new bands rock out a few originals and a cover. Sometimes it's awesome, like last year's FLYING BLUE SQUIRRELS, who just released a digital EP on Bandcamp, and sometimes it's a shitshow, like Al Polk's beautifully disastrous and aptly-named WALK OF SHAME (suggested EP name, if they ever create one: Warren Towers), also from 2011.

A wise person once said about the event's participants: "You either have a great time and love your One Night Band, or it makes you love the band you're in even more. It's win win." Well said. This year's festivities include members of Streight Angular, Mellow Bravo, Ghost Box Orchestra, Fat Creeps, and Dear Leader, plus Will Dailey, Walter Sickert, and more.

The added wrinkles to this year's party, the fourth installment of 1NB, revolve more around the spectators than the participants. The whole shebang will be live streamed from the Middle East Downstairs by Plus1tv, allowing out-of-towners, bands on tour, and those who just can't make it to Cambridge to check out the results.

And the organizers will also be giving an exclusive look into the creative process during the nine hours leading up to showtime. Co-curators Ashley Willard and Richard Bouchard will be posting like a mad(wo)men to the Boston Band Crush Facebook page, updating the internet and beyond on band pairings, moniker debates, flipcam and photo updates from the studios, that kind of stuff.

We live in a reality TV-driven society, so this is a perfect addition to the One Night Band experience. It's great that we have a Flying Blue Squirrels EP, and great that 1NB paved the way for their creation -- but now we get to see exactly how the magic happens.

And that magic leads to a cause even better than the show itself: proceeds from the night will benefit Zumix and Girls Rock Campaign.
