[live review + photos] Not giving a fuck with the Fucktrots @ the Middle East

“We just don't give a fuck!” That age-old punk mantra couldn't be truer as THE FUCKTROTS took the stage at the Middle East Upstairs this past Monday.

Decked in leather pants and nothing else, singer James Cobb repeated the adage before launching into the raucous “Songs in G.” Loud, fast, and short are the songs, but the lyrics recall long, steamy sexcapades and lengthy, tumultuous relationships. Sometimes the lyrics are characteristic of a lover scorn, before regressing back into the free-for-all and fuck-it attitude.

The band, comprised of three Newton natives, are the closest thing to anarchopunk that the quiet, suburban town has seen since the reign of Anal Cunt. Though the crowd was more so a high school reunion (OH NINE) than a sweaty den full of crusty kids and skinny jeans, the energy was equally as charged up as any other Boston punk show.

The Fucktrots' ability to seamlessly intertwine clangs from a Casio with biting critiques of societal circumstance allows for an unheard of brand of unrefined punk. “I suggested producing their stuff to make it cleaner, but -– as they said -– they just don't give a fuck about how raw it sounds and that's what makes them awesome,” said local producer Jake Yuhas, who works under the moniker Bug Eyes.

“Obsessed with American Women” described the degradation of white-collar establishments and comfortable relationships, with Cobb blaming someone for being “so full of shit and piss and vomit, like a college campus” over wild riffs from sometimes-guitarist Patrick Walsh.

The beauty of the “fuck-it-all” ethos is essentially that anything can be done without need for explanation to anyone. So when drummer Dan Lawrence got up and took the helm for vocals and guitar on two of the songs, or when they slowed it down for the confessional “House Wrecking Party,” it was obvious that no one could say anything about it and no one wanted to.

Catch the Fucktrots at Jamaica Plain's Video Underground on June 15 and at the Whitehaus on July 7. Their Ready To Die EP can be downloaded for free via Bandcamp. After the embed jump, check the video captured by Quackking Media.
