All sorts of fun in the WFNX studio this evening, and it had fuck-all to do with the Super Moon. Or did it? Glenn Di Benedetto and Nate Leavitt of glammed-out noir-pop band PARLOUR BELLS dropped by for a full 120-minute hang, discussing their participation in the Rumble (dey wuz r0bbd), attempts to play the Faces nightclub demolition party (dey were thwarted by both nature and politics), and memories of hanging off a Showcase Cinemas sign in Lawrence back in the ‘90s. We had a few good chats, and spun some cool shit, all in preparation for their CD release party this Friday at Precinct in Somerville.
Tune in next week as the dudes in Hooray For Earth drop by WFNX, and maybe we’ll finally figure out of they’re still a “Boston band” or not (half the band lives in New York, we might have mentioned in the past). Anyway, love you mean it. Here’s tonight’s playlist:
RIBS “Kiss” – Rock sledgehammer of a new single off the upcoming Russian Blood EP, which gets proper release party treatment May 25 at T.T. The Bear’s Place in Cambridge (Boston Accents faves the Suicide Dolls are also on the bill). The RIBS crew will be in the WFNX studio a fortnight front tonight, May 20. We’ll probably play all of the new EP, it’s quite nice.
PARLOUR BELLS “I’d Like To Think” – First track from our in-studio guests tonight, who release compilation album If You Think You’re Looking At The End, Think Again this Friday at Precinct in Somerville. We have re-named the record IYTY LATETA, for purposes relating to brevity and Twitter.
VIVA VIVA “Even The Score” – Off their recent record, What’s The Kim Deal, which looks pretty fucking awesome on pink vinyl. Here are a few stores around town where you can purchase it! Viva plays the Ja Hills release party at the Middle East in Cambridge on May 26. Also, the band is now on Spotify!
THE DAILY PRAVDA “Dead House (2012)” – Playing Friday’s show at Precinct, and releasing the Dead House EP, taking the (IMHO) standout track from 2009’s Burning Bible Diamonds and polishing it up for re-release. Such a great track with an ever better last minute or so.
NEMES “Hooray” – Accents debut from Worcester-based indie/folk quintet, playing Great Scott on Tuesday, May 8 with Chaparrals and Brad Byrd.
COKE WEED “Magpie” – Mystical Bar Harbor, Maine band that sounds more like weed than coke, but still a pretty strong track, off, April 17’s Nice Dreams record.
PARLOUR BELLS “Pet Names” – Another slice from the Bell, hanging in studio tonight. The lead track off 2010’s Heart Beatings EP.
AGE RINGS “Déjà vu” – New EP AM/PM gets released May 26 at the Midriff Records Residency Night IV at Radio in Somerville. This could be the last Age Rings record as frontman Ted Billings prepares a solo album.
EDDIE JAPAN “You Will Find Me Dead In My Comfort Zone” – Also playing Friday’s show at Precinct. Selected by the gentlemen of Parlour Bells.
PARLOUR BELLS “O Holiday” – Speaking of… this was a stand-alone holiday single released back in December; I think we included it in our Phoenix Holiday EP.
PARLOUR BELLS “Speak Up” – And another, why the fuck not. Single from July 2011.
MICHAEL J EPSTEIN MEMORIAL LIBRARY “Faith In Free (Part 1)” – Also selected by the Bell boys, because sometimes we just hand our guests the keys.
PARLOUR BELLS “Heavy Dream (Hurricane Mix by Michael J. Epstein)” – Last May Parlour Bells offered up "Heavy Dream" for artistic exploration through sonic reshuffling and reimagination. Epstein, with not much else on his plate, took up the cause.
MOE POPE + RAIN “Grey Clouds” – New track with major crossover appeal from critically-acclaimed Roxbury MC. The Phoenix once dubbed him “a contemporary rap artifact.”
D-TENSION “Fire” – WFNX’s own D-Tension repping Lowell and adding 11 rock samples – ones that shout/say/speak “Fire” -- into his hip-hop blender. And this is the clean version, kids.
HERRA TERRA “Hyperborea” – Ultra slick Worcester electro-rock dudes bringing their black bolts of lightning pop to the pill at Great Scott this Friday, May 11.
DOM featuring Gucci Mane “Living In America” – Dom is still living in America; he’s just doing it in Brooklyn now. Read Barry Thompson’s Cellars by Starlight on Dom in this Thursday’s Phoenix, then catch the Massachusetts native and his band sparkle-out Brighton Music Hall on Friday, May 11.
BATHAUS “Inferno” – Dropping a four-artist slate specific to the Best Local Electronic Artist in the Phoenix’s Best Music Poll, of which voting is currently open. Ashley Capachione teams up with Jimmy Rossi of Avoxblue (more on him later) and…
GLASS TEETH “Holes (Crimes Edit)” -- … Xavier from Glass Teeth for a Boston Accents-sponsored bill Wednesday, May 16 at the Middle East. It’s also Avoxblue’s record release party.
M.O.O.N. “Release (Wrong Island Mix)” – Expect more mixtapes and other projects in the next few weeks from Stephen Gilarde, the man behind M.O.O.N. Figured spinning this was appropriate with the Supermoon showing its big cheese face over the weekend.
ANDRE OBIN “A Star Is Torn” – Obin is ready to hit Europe for three dates – two in Holland, one in Berlin – later this month. This menacing track is the b-side to the Valencia 7-inch, which I released last month on my Vanya Records.
JOHN BARERA “Sound Love” – Speaking of Berlin, Barera’s B-Tracks prepping for a gig at Germany’s Berghain. Catch them at Gallery at Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge this Tuesday, May 8, with Alex From Queens, Caseroc, and resident Brendan Wesley. DANCE.
TERRAVITA + CASEY DESMOND “Settle The Score” – Dubstep track from the drum n bass production trio who also toil as Hot Pink Delorean, featuring vocals from a former contestant on NBC’s The Voice.
AVOXBLUE “The Confessional” -- Save the Date: May 16 at the Middle East in Cambridge, Rossi releases his A Place Without Time EP. Grab “The Confessional” as the Boston Phoenix Mp3 of the Week this Thursday.
GRAND RESORT “Night Is Dark” – Closing out with the latest ill joint fron Andres M. Pichardo, who released this latest pop joyride last week. You can get it via On The Download, huge supporters of Grand Resort. Vanguard Dreams is expected later this year.
