Mp3 of the Week: Thick As Thieves "Old New Amsterdam;" Saturday @ Middle East
If you’re going to go out, go out with a bang. Better to burn out than fade away. Being in a band is a pain in the ass. These are all truisms that apply to Boston’s always punchy and melodic THICK AS THIEVES, who’ll call it quits after the release of their latest (and last) record, Practice Resurrection Like the Fox Makes Tracks, their fifth release since they formed in 2004. The riff on “Old New Amsterdam” paradoxically splits the international difference between Americana and classic Britpop, while frontman Tyler Littwin’s melody stops just short of the bombast that the sweeping chord changes might have supported. It’s an atmospheric, pretty send-off for a good band that, after Saturday night at the Middle East in Cambridge (a farewell bill with Kingsley Flood, Spirit Kid, and Tallahassee), shall be no more. Did I mention: all things must pass. So grab the MP3 below.
