[sxsw2012] A shimmy and a shake with New York's Fort Lean


First time I came across stylish Brooklyn dudes FORT LEAN, I was pulled in by the Girls-esque jangle of “Beach Holiday,” the lead track off last April’s debut EP. That shit was straight up “Lust For Life,” but it was way cool because Girls are awesome and we could listen to both guitar intros on repeat pretty much forever.

But after catching the hotly-tipped Lean yesterday at the Side Bar at South By Southwest, on a pretty top-swag Wednesday afternoon bill with Reptar (2011 50 Bands 50 States: Georgia), Stepdad (2011 50 Bands 50 States: Michigan), and Boston’s own Pretty & Nice it was clear there’s another sonic lineage going on here: Put simply, if the Strokes had any idea on how to evolve their sound, by their third record they could have maybe sounded like Fort Lean.

But they didn’t, and now we have these guys, whose Sunsick 7-inch just dropped last month off Neon Gold and Black Bell Records – the indie label that gave the US its first taste of the Joy Formidable a few years ago.
