RIP DJ Mehdi
My
heart sank a little this morning when I checked my Facebook account
only to find a slathering of status' paying respects to DJ MEHDI (Mehdi
Favéris-Essadi) who passed early this morning at the age of
34. Details of his death are scarce at the moment, but ever-reputable electronic
music source, Resident Advisor, is reporting this on the situation:
"(T)he
DJ and producer fell to his death through a roof along with two
friends, both of whom have been hospitalized. Paris Social Club posted
this message on its Facebook page
this afternoon: "Following the death of DJ Mehdi, we have made the
exceptional decision to close the club tonight. An evening of silence in
honor of the artist. Thank you for not commenting on this status.""
Mehdi is predominantly
known through his ties to the Ed Banger record label, on which he's
been been a certified roster member since his 2006 debut LP, Lucky Boy,
alongside the likes of Justice, Mr. Oizo, and Sebastian. Since then he's
collaborated with the likes of Daft Punk, Chromeo, and Miike Snow.
Say
what you will about the recent drop off of electro as a thing anyone
wants to hear anywhere anymore, but with Justice poised to drop their
followup, this news is especially disheartening, as things seemed truly
on the up-and-up for the Parisian crew of DJs. And with Twitter love
coming this morning from the likes of A-Trak, MSTRKFT, and a slew of
others, it really evidences both his impact and how hard this news is
hitting the worldwide electronic music community.
Below are a couple choice cuts evidencing the man's chops. Pour some Dom in respect.
