Well, not really. To be honest, I expected the Toronto indie/hardcore band FUCKED UP to be a lot more destructive on stage last Friday at Royale. They have a rich history of being permanently banned from venues, getting the cops called on them, and generally just making everything a giant clusterfuck of tom foolery. They kept their cool (sort of), but the stagediving caused security to eventually wander over to the front of the stage during the song “Police,” naturally. I could kind of understand why they were trying to stop the crowdsurfing, seeing as there were clearly not enough people at the front of the stage to offer enough of a landing area, making the whole thing look kind of like lemmings jumping off a cliff. I think I saw more skulls smack the floor than your typical WWF wrestling match. Fucked Up frontman Pink Eyes spent most of his time on the floor, screaming into a circle of wild punk kids while a team of impromptu volunteers held his mic cable above the crowd to keep him from strangling himself. Pink Eyes gave a shoutout to the security at the end of the show, thanking them for “being chill.” After all, they were only trying to keep these kids from getting blood and brain matter on the dancefloor before Stuffy Eurodisco Nite began.
