Ok, things are getting nutty at the Sapporo House out here in Cali -- Freelance Whales just came by and banged out a few jams for WFNX before making small talk and carrying out a few cases of Sap for the ride back to the fairgrounds, Foals were like ninjas coming in and out (In-N-Out, mmmmmmm, we've been there twice already) and now Foster The People just barged through the front gates with the energy of an Adderall Happy Meal.
A few pre-show technical difficulties didn't prevent CRYSTAL CASTLES from blowing up the Outdoor Theatre stage last night at Coachella in an LED explosion of electro thrash aggression and strobe-lit synthesizers. It was pretty much, so far, the best performance of this still-young music festival in the desert.
Timing is everything here at Coachella, and on the first day, we sometimes had it and sometimes did not. We had it when Alice Glass leaped over our Phoenix/WFNX photographer during CRYSTAL CASTLES' monster performance of "Baptism" (video of that in a bit) and we didn't have it when we missed the Killers unannounced reunion during an encore of Brandon Flowers' set.
Perhaps you noticed the shitstorm that rained down after the Phoenix revealed that Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents had withdrawn from the semi-finals of the Rock And Roll Rumble. Perhaps you noticed Jenny Dee herself accusing us of getting our facts wrong, and her fans following suit. For the record: the fact remains that JD&D blew off the Rumble for a one-off gig in Gloucester.
When Sara Marcus started writing her latest book, Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution, she may have not been trying to spearhead a new feminist movement amongst young, DIY-minded girls. But half a year later (her book came out via Harper Perennial in September), it's clear that she did, and this weekend's Ladyfest Easthampton in Northampton, MA is proof.
After two decades in the game, the gorgeous, grandiose, and entirely grounded music of ELBOW culminated in the Brits latest release Build A Rocket Boys! Skillfully woven, some tracks on the album grab sweeping instrumentation from 2001's Asleep in the Back and joyous guitar rhythms from the 2008 Mercury Music Prize-winning album Seldom Seen Kid
Have you ever danced with El Diablo on the corner of an eight ball? Driven through a bean field wearing nothing but a boombox made of magic? If not, then the new four-track Latin-dicked BSTRD Boots 12-inch from Flavorheard subsidiary the WHISKEY BARONS is your chance to surf South American mountaintops in a flamingo-pink Delorean.
CAVE IN secretly recorded a new album last year and didn't tell anyone about it until about a week ago, when news of its existence leaked onto Amazon -- catching even the band's label, Hydrahead Recordings, off guard. And by "off guard," we mean that they knew about it but were supposed to let us tell you first.

Oh snap -- it's a Rumble controversy. JENNY DEE & THE DEELINQUENTS have pulled out of this week's semi-finals due to a conflict with another show, which they claim -- suddenly-- was booked last year. Uhhh, what? Seriously? What kind of shit is THAT? Hey kids, when Captain Carlo's in Gloucester comes'a-calling, you just can't say no.
Here's a friendly heads up -- SoCal horror-core sensations (haha) ODD FUTURE/OFWGKTA make their Boston debut at the Paradise Rock Club on Thursday, May 12. Tickets go on sale Friday at noon via Ticketmaster, and we're sure shit will sell out before your boss gets back from that afternoon's liquid lunch.
I'm definitely the last person on the planet to be commenting on the BEASTIE BOYS, but these two items both achieved a first in my personal playbook -- neither made me want to rip my ears off, dip then in a shot glass filled with Cholula, and shove them down my throat, and I actually watched/listened to each clip all the way through.
You can't fuck with fate. About an hour after some Phoenix editors get back from lunch this afternoon at Cambridge 1, where one of the many topics of conversation centered around NABO RAWK'S bizarre fetish of getting bodyslammed onto folding tables, Wrestlemania-style, do we come across this video for "Nine."
