[video] The National @ the Studio at Webster Hall

Every once in a long while, MTV will do something so great that I temporarily forget that it has essentially become a 24/7 showcase for my two least favorite types of people, pregnant teenagers and cheesin' juice heads.

But this bit of greatness arrives in the form of a special "Live in NYC" performance with everyone's favorite angsty Ohioans, THE NATIONAL. The five-song set recorded at the Studio at Webster Hall focuses heavily on standout cuts from last year's brilliant High Violet ("Bloodbuzz Ohio", "Afraid of Everyone", "Conversation 16", and "Terrible Love") and the always wonderful "Fake Empire". Of course it'd be too much to expect MTV to check the commercialism at the door, so you still have to sit through 30-second adverts for Covergirl and Trojan before each tune, but it's worth it, trust.

My allegiance to the National was birthed at last year's Bonnaroo. The type of near-religious experience you always search out in live music, I still ponder on a regular basis whether I was merely caught off guard because I had never really listened to them, or if Matt Berninger truly is the second coming of Jesus in a well-fitting suit. This video lends itself to the latter. Praise up.
