We have no idea what the haters are smoking -- it's certainly not the good shit -- because last night's Best Coast performance at the Middle East in Cambridge was pretty spot-on and nowhere near the live trainwreck some critics have reported. After raw, rocket-fueled performances by Young Adults and Male Bonding, Bethany Cosentino and her crew were a wall of mesmerizing pop noise, barrelling through her set and sounding like a young and emboldened Juliana Hatfield. The sold-out crowd was at first oh-so-bored, oh-so-stylish and a bit sauced, shove-happy & eye-rolly, but came to life once Best Coast hit the stage in delivering one of the best shows I've seen all year, and the flipcam video above is for the jam "Crazy For You," which showed up fairly early in their set. Cosentino apparently was fighting off some virus -- it didn't show -- and even revealed guitarist Bobb Bruno to be a Boston Celtics fan after she mocked the crowd, and our dear city, for losing this year's NBA Finals. Oh, that's so LA.
