Die Antwoord brings the ruckus to Royale

Believe the hype. While we really don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves, last night at Royale Die Antwoord put on maybe the best live performance of the year. Phoenix music writer Daniel Brockman — author of this week’s Die Antwoord feature — caught the zef side flow in NYC a few weeks ago, and repeatedly tried to warn us about the sheer awesomeness of the Die Antwoord live experience. But that still wasn’t enough to prepare us for the full-blown post-rave crunk-electro hip-hop onslaught Ninja and Yo-Landi Visser threw down on Tremont last night.

Needless to say, it blew show-openers Sleigh Bells off the stage. While I believe the increasingly-annoying New York duo has the shelf life of my cat Lola's gravy-soaked dish of Fancy Feast served in a window-less kitchen on a hot July afternoon, there’s no denying that the mosh-frenzied kids just love it. Fine. And while no one should be hyping Die Antwoord while at the same time dissing another band’s potential longevity, who cares if the South African trio is gone in a year’s time? Last night was all about the now, and the spectacle factor was through the roof. In fact, it was so “right now” it already feels passé a day later.

Regardless, Die Antwoord straight killed it, and all the whispers that have been getting louder about this allegedly fake band completely bringing the live show ruckus have proved to be on-point. Crazy. Check out the above clip from last night’s gig, and mad props to OptimusEdge for the bootleg — and the steady hand. Go ninja go!
