RIP founding Big Star bassist Andy Hummel

A quick RIP to Andy Hummel, the founding bassist of early-‘70s Memphis power-pop group Big Star.

It’s been a tough year for fans of Big Star, as news of Hummel’s death comes merely months after front man Alex Chilton died of a heart attack in March. Yesterday, Hummel died in his home in Texas after a two-year struggle with cancer. He, like Chilton, was 59.

Hummel co-founded Big Star in 1971. He was among the participants in the Chilton memorial show earlier this year at SXSW, a gig that was initially aimed to celebrate the Big Star legacy before shifting to a tribute to Chilton, who died on the first day of the music and arts festival. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, it was the first time Hummel performed with Big Star in more than 35 years.
