SXSW 2010 (Saturday): Vivian Girls Acoustic Set

Vivian Girls

I stumbled into a Vivian Girls acoustic set while walking between the Fader Fort and the Mess With Texas show. No drums (Ali played tambourine), a relatively clean guitar (meaning notes/chords were for once discernible) and a bright, boomy bass. Their vocals were hardly mic’d, but the room, which was hardly more than a concrete bunker, amplified their voices plenty. Stripped down sets are often the test of a bands talent. Here they couldn’t hide behind clouds of reverb or insane feedback, everything was laid out plain and bare. And it killed, their harmonies were spot on, the solos were played clean and angular and they seemed just as comfortable there as they normally do raging onstage. Video to come later.
