Less than two hours after LARRY PLATT brought the Atlanta auditions of American Idol to a close last night, a Facebook page for his anthem "Pants on the Ground" had already attracted upwards of 45,000 fans. At midnight, two of the top ten trending topics on Twitter and four of the top five top searches on Google were for variations on Platt or his song; Google Trends gave "Pants on the Ground" its highest rating: "volcanic." Before the night was out, Simon Cowell's offhanded remark -- "I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit" -- had already come true. After the jump: an amazing assortment of emo covers, autotune refixes, singing babies, snap-music remixes, and dudes jumping around in their bedrooms.
For those of us who braved the rain at Foxboro to mingle with several thousand AMERICAN IDOL wannabes last summer, the Boston auditions show was mostly, well, a wash. With one notable exception: ANDREW FENLON, the bespectacled, belligerent gent who got a starring role at the end of Day One. It wasn't a particularly great acting job, but Fenlon's verbal jousting with Kara Dioguardi and Simon Cowell became the new season's first breakout moment.

20 MORE PHOTOS: Julian Casablancas at the Paradise
Lucky us: Boston was on the short-list of JULIAN CASABLANCAS's solo-tour schedule. If you missed Daniel Brockman's interview with him in these pages last week, we grilled him again up in the WFNX studios prior to his Paradise Rock Club gig on Friday night.
We should've known, last week when KAY HANLEY tweeted her New Year's resolution to become AMANDA PALMER's new BFF,
that this would happen sooner rather than later. Last night Palmer
showed up at Kay Hanley's solo gig at the Lizard Lounge, and the two
performed a loose duet on one of Palmer's new favorite covers, the old
ragtime standard "Makin' Whoopee." Everyone knows we can't resist these
two separately, let alone together, singing a song about fucking. OMFG.
I can't believe they didn't invite us. Thankfully, an astute viewer
uploaded it immediately to the Tubes. Check out the performance after the jump.
Born as the solo project of one Ian
McCarthy, Conservative Man have, over the course of two albums and six years,
evolved into a full-fledged power-pop force. They already have two home bases (Nashua and Philly), but they’re fixing to make that three with a Cambridge release party for a new EP (recorded with the Luxury’s Jason Dunn).
New England Conservatory-trained indie chanteuse CASEY DIENEL -- operating once again under her WHITE HINTERLAND moniker -- has unveiled the first glimpse of her next album Kairos, due out March 9 on Dead Oceans. Dienel has already covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time -- her early demos suggested a Girl Scout version of the Dresden Dolls, but subsequent records found her mounting increasingly intricate assaults on ghost folk, chamber rock, and indie jazz.
Highlights from this week's music pile:
"I guess I always had a kind of fantasy of being, you know, a modern composer — not like I can really pull that off or anything."
-- Julian Casablancas, talking to the Phoenx about his new solo record
"There are a few words I did not expect to use in describing Vampire Weekend's second album.
