I'll be polite, here: the Decemberists - who play the Bank of America Pavilion this evening - inspire strong opinions. Some people love their shimmering, whimsical songs with all their literary references and find Colin Meloy a charming raconteur. Some people, as memorably summed up in a Voice piece by Chris Ott, find them affected and too pretentious and precious for their own good. But regardless where your opinion falls on this particular spectrum - and, yes, I tend to concur with the latter view, though that first album had a couple of okay songs - I think we can all agree that the note-perfect rendition of Heart's "Crazy On You" they've been pulling out on their current tour is pretty kickass. Of course, that's less a compliment to Meloy and company and more to guest vocalists Shara Worden and Becky Sharp (better known as this and this, respectively). Worden in particular sounds born for this. And it also stands as testimony to the general awesomeness of Heart: one of their songs can even make a band as insufferable polarizing as the Decemberists sound like the greatest band in the world.
