Last month we got an offer to
interview Darryl McDaniels, who’s much better known as the latter half of the
beyond legendary rap group Run-DMC. Sure, every other news outlet in town got
the call as well, but we like to think we made the most of it.
While the focus
of our interview was Run-DMC’s April 4 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame, that milestone covered a mere fraction of the talk. DMC is a passionate
and kind dude, and he took time to rap about everything from his struggles with
booze and depression to Adidas and how his posse set the bar for live boom bap, and he explains why he and Run aren't performing at their induction ceremony this Saturday. This is not some
bullshit red carpet interview. Sure, I pander to the sire, but he is the king of rock;
and there is none
higher. On behalf of the Phoenix: rest in peace to Jam Master Jay;
and congratulations to the most important rap
group of all-time on this much deserved honor.
