The official announcement will be made this morning in conjunction with the big E3 convention in LA, but the Times has leaked that a new GNR tune called "Shackler's Revenge" will be the big hook on the new MTV/Harmonix release of Rock Band 2, coming this fall. Not only that, the venerable Times has allowed itself to get caught up in the game of, "no, really, this time it REALLY MEANS they're gonna release Chinese Democracy.

Gnarls Barkley, "Reckoner" (Radiohead cover, Live at Rosskilde)

Radiohead, "The Rip" (Portishead cover, from some hotel room)

Two -heads are better than one. Also, we don't like to make too much of covers, but listening to Cee-Lo tackle Mr. Yorke's high notes on "Reckoner," and thinking also of Yorke's own soul turn on "Nude," we're not entirely sure that Radiohead didn't make a better R&B album than Danger Mouse this time around.

At the end of festival road trips, I often wind up with a file full of random notes and observations that didn’t fit into my dispatches; and, if I’m not too exhausted on the trip home, I compile them into lists. If you read the last four posts, I know what you're thinking: “A lot of your tangents didn’t fit, but you forced them on us anyway.” I know – but this right here is the real Montreal dumpster. Some of it is obvious junk that can be applied to any non-U.S. city, and other items are just useless or irrelevant. But if you put those rubber gloves on and dive in to your elbows, you might just find some tasty kernels after the jump . . .

    Bloc Party: "Mercury"

First impressions of the new Bloc Party single: sounds like a gahhh-rage remix of Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." The music's just OK, but the video -- like whoa. Every election needs an overblown, paranoid music-video allegory replete with nukes, Planet of the Apes apes, and grainy Pentagon footage .

    DOWNLOAD: Passion Pit, "Sleepyhead" (mp3)

The Hold Steady, the Apes, the Fatal Flying Guiloteens, and . . . PASSION PIT? Hellz yeah -- your/our fave upstart Boston band just signed to Frenchkiss, who'll release the band's new EP, Chuck of Change, in September. Hype machine begins in August, when the Pit take on the traditional hipster-converting residency at Piano's.

EXCLUSIVE: Times New Viking, "The Late '80s (Live at Great Scott)"

Your average man on the street in Texas might disagree, but here at the Phoenix we think Times New Viking are pretty much the bees knees. We just named them Ohio's best new band -- mostly to give us something to argue about over Fourth of July weekend -- and coincidentally they were gonna be in town, so we took the cameras.
