Roadsteamer rides again

The matted wig has been replaced by a natty bowler, and the stick-on mustache has been lost to the ages. More startlingly, that galaxy of hairy, multicolor tattoos lies hidden beneath a sharp and sober suit. But Robby Roadsteamer is still a rock and roll godhead, a barrel-chested power-ballad belter with an ego as big as his machismo.

Nonetheless, even he is a team player. So it is that his new record, I’ll Be at Your Funeral, a concept album about “dinosaurs, the North Shore, true love, and the original 8-bit Nintendo,” isn’t credited to Robby Roadsteamer at all.

Rather, his band’s name has been shortened — much in the way Jefferson Starship became, simply, Starship — to Roadsteamer. His band mates have returned the favor by adopting his surname as their own.

Now they are family. (Much like the Ramones, or Nelson.)

The record is in stores as of today, and its release will be celebrated at the Paradise on Saturday night, with guests Campaign For Real Time, Fluttr Effect, and the Snowleopards.

Be there, or be a failure on three different levels.
