John Pike, drummer for the Syracuse indie band Ra Ra Riot, was found dead in Buzzards Bay on Sunday afternoon. He was 23. Pike went missing early Saturday morning in Fairhaven, Mass., following a show on Friday night at the Living Room in Providence. Emergency workers began searching for the drummer on Sunday; Pike's body was found yesterday in seven feet of water, about 150 yards from a spot where searchers found his Blackberry on Saturday. Pike's last communication was a text message to his girlfriend around 3 am Saturday, SouthCoastToday reports.
Ra Ra Riot had just kicked off a summer tour that was to include dates with Tokyo Police Club, including a late-July show at the Middle East in Cambridge. According to CMJ, their debut EP is due out July 10, and -- ominously -- includes a song titled "Dying Is Fine." "Starting in a couple weeks we will all be focusing on the band full-time, which is very exciting," guitarist Milo Bonacci told CMJ.com in a story that was published the day before Pike disappeared. "Up until now, it has been a nights and weekends sort of thing." The band got a boost last year when they performed a live set on indie-tastemaking station WOXY, available here.
