Bon(o) voyage

It's not every night that you wander into a financial district watering hole and wind up having a drink with Bono. It's even more surreal when he asks you to get up on a table-top and introduce him to a crowd for whom he needs absolutely no introduction whatsoever. But that's what happened to our bud (and Phoenix and S@N correspondent) Jonathan Perry on Monday night. Yes, the savior of the free world (Bono, that is -- Jonathan's pretty cool too, though) was among the many revelers and well-wishers attending the farewell soiree at J.J. Foley's for departing Boston Globe senior music critic Steve Morse, a fixture on the local scene for the past 31 years. (In one not entirely apocryphal story, a Globe freelancer is said to have approached Mick Jagger at the FleetCenter for a quick comment; Jagger told him, "When I'm in Boston, I only speak to Steve Morse.") Morse took the buyout during the last round of Globe downsizing, and following the U2 gig at the Gaaahden, a who's-who of local critics joined a crowd that included a bunch of Globe staffers, industry insiders, and Peter Wolf to toast Morse out in style. Introduced by his biggest fan (that'd be Jon Perry), Bono got up and made a short speech, then stuck around to swap stories and sign autographs.

Steve Morse: the Noise Board remembers.
