Well, it ain't no Bunratty's or Local 186, but as the pix above should clue you, Wonderbar is getting a crap-load cooler these days. Yes, the Allston joint known for its under-aged over-cleavaged girls and fundamentally uncool dress code is taking action to change its image. (Gee, where have we heard that sentence before?) First step: hiring Scott Richards (DJ Scott Bliss) as their brand-new Entertainment and Marketing Director. New weekly events include a Thursday 80's night named with an American Psycho reference, and a Sunday "Boogie Down" Brunch, which boasts of eight hours of food, eight DJs, and five featured artists every week. Also, DJ Bliss saves the best night for himself: Friday night's Thunderbar, which he spins alongside DJ Caseroc, a missionary out to convert you from a schlumpy indie kid or lost raver into a true believer in the classic elements of dance music.

This Friday night a little before 11pm, kids started rolling downstairs in sneaks and t-shirts, where Bliss and Caseroc spun '80s dance-punk (Dinosaur L), '70s Afrobeat disco stomp (Bohannon), house (Tiefshwarz), PJ Harvey re-edits, and Rolling Stones remixes -- all of which incited an impromptu b-boy circle on the dance floor. Last night was part of a new live-guest trend that had Providence one-man electro-pop machine San Serac -- '70s-inspired vox, keys, synths, samplers, drum machine/drum pad action -- taking over for half an hour.

"Thunderbar" jumpoff is weekly, and free, and Bliss says it's usually been at capacity by midnight. He describes why he thinks its catching on: "It's sort of like redefining what dance music is to people. The rave scene is dead. People are looking for other things, and re-attaching to the roots of dance music."
