Catholic rock

This is Craig Finn. He never slept with your hoodrat friend.

Blurry photos from Cami, who had to knock over some blonde
shitty BC girls (definitely their first time at the Middle East) to take these.

Craig Finn went to Boston College. So did we. Even though the thirtysomething, hand-jiving Hold Steady frontman hasn’t outgrown the Tappa-Kegga-Day mentality endemic to BC undergraduate living (after their last Saturday-night set at the Middle East, Finn himself was later selling customized combination Hold Steady lighters/beer openers at the merch table), we feel a weird kinship with the dude. Boston College was, after all, the sort of place where when we drunkenly tried to discuss music at parties, the dirty-white-hatted dickheads would slur, “So you like Dave Matthews?” And so when nearly everyone else who comes from your alma mater turns into a football player or a reality television contestant or a materialistic jerk (our so-called old friends don't have Web pages), it's nice to see someone from there creating something other than ad copy, even if it is the kind of music that could easily crossover to Big Head Todd fans. And that's why we had to check the Hold Steady out live, just because, I dunno, their record’s good jogging music and his poetry’s pretty cool and. . . it’s sorta like wanting to see the art of someone who used to live in your apartment.

While our interaction with Finn was limited to a very pleasant transaction at the merch table (during which he thanked us and everyone in sight for coming), Phoenix crack correspondent Elisabeth Donnelly actually talked with him earlier that evening about sin and "brilliant dudes" (Jesuits) and something other stuff. Read her piece from this week's Phoenix for yerself here.
