Dept. of Undiscovered Talents

Does this man look like a licensed beautician?

Phoenix blues and rock critic Ted Drozdowski wears many hats. For instance he's got this Stevie Ray Vaughan number he wears around that's pretty rad. But, like, in a metaphorical sense, too: in adddition to being an award-winning journalist, he's also a train enthusiast, songwriter (for people you've actually heard of), and an asskicking blues guitarist who fronts a group called Scissormen (not to be confused with Scissorfight or Scissor Girls or Scissor Sisters).

We've known Ted a long time -- he gave OTD our first job in the rockcrit game, our first guitar-tech assignment, and played us Son House's versions of "Death Letter" and "John the Revelator" for the first time, for all of which we are eternally grateful -- so here we thought we knew everything about him. That is, until we read a story that appeared a few days ago in the Washington Post, which began like this:

"The Boston duo called the Scissormen took that name because both guitarist Ted Drozdowski and drummer Larry Dersch are licensed beauticians."

After we got over our shock at this heretofore undiscovered tidbit of Ted's work history (he told us he was an editor at Musician!) it occured to us that we needed a haircut. So we emailed him and asked if he could squeeze us in. It turns out the Scissormen are still on the road, but Ted responded by clearing up the misunderstanding:

"Well, I tell a joke about that from the stage to fill time while I'm re-tuning: 'You all might be wondering why we're called the Scissormen? It's because Larry and I are licensed beauticians.' It usually get a big laugh, but the Post reviewer apparently took it seriously. Pretty funny."

Whoopsie. File under: Get me rewrite!
