Fuck You, Katrina

Dateline: Allston, Tuesday night. It was the culmination of a three-night-stand of Katrina Benefit shows at Great Scott. All door sales plus bakesales and record sales of the evening went to hurricane relief. Shortened sets and shared equipment: you know how they do. The line-up also included a couple of bands who you'll be seeing next week at N.E.S.T. Let's go to the highlights . . .

1. Reports' scored high marks as their jangly psych-pop wooed earlycomers. LISTEN: Reports, "Move & Glow, Parts 1 & 2" (mp3). [N.E.S.T. slot: Tues 9.20 Mass Art]

2. "Set me free why doooontcha baaaaaabe? Get outa my life why doooontcha baaaaaaabe?!" The sextet-licious badboys of alterna-rock The Chainltetter pounded out an extended version of their Supremes cover. LISTEN: The Chainletter "Keep Me Hangin' On" (mp3)

3. Tom Savant got carried away with his haughty falsetto (and by Night Rally's Devin King!) LISTEN: Bon Savants, "Atomic Age" (mp3)

4. It was a veritable sing-along for art-rock heros Night Rally as they plowed through a set of borrowed equipment-related malfunctions and New Orleans-inspired alcohol-induced puke stories. LISTEN: Night Rally, "remember November ember" (mp3). [N.E.S.T. slot: Sat 9.24 Great Scott]

5. The Dirty Three -- Tim (manager), Carl (booking), Ben (promotions) -- raffled off a goody basket of CD's, records, skateboards, not to mention a year-long free admission pass to Great Scott.

6. Benefit of the doubt: Harmony-laced pop sweethearts Emergency Music played to a thinning crowd after bands' start times started running behind schedule. "George Bush doesn't like black people," echoed EM's guitarist John Beck of Kanye West during between-song banter. LISTEN: Emergency Music, "Everything Is Fine" (mp3)

7. Dave from The Lot Six ended the evening with songs about easing the pain by killing brain cells, and even broke out the band's cover of Gram parson's "Brass Buttons." LISTEN: The Lot Six, "Brass Buttons" on their myspace page.
