Wake me up when September ends
PHOENIX EXCLUSIVE: DIPLO TO QUIT DJ GAME, PULL A TERRELL OWENS ON BIG DADA, PLAYS INSTRUMENTS ON SONG CALLED "MY GIRLFRIEND BROKE UP WITH ME"
ALSO: M.I.A. TAPS SOME DUDE WHO SPINS FOR FREE ON MONDAY NIGHTS IN CAMBRIDGE TO REMIX NEXT SINGLE.
ALSO-ER: GENIUS CAPS+JONES MIX AT LEMON-RED
Wes Pentz: gay for Vader?Holy fuck, kids. We've been up for three days blasting
Zeppelin and
CNN and watching Bourbon Street take a drink. But all the sudden there's like a flood of big things going on up here.
1. We've got the exclusive Chris "Lemon-Red" Nelson interview with Diplo in which Mr. Pentz declares he's QUITTING THE DJ GAME.
Read the story in this week's Phoenix. Those of you who know who Diplo is may also want to read the Web-'sclusive
AIM Q&A here. And those of you who have no fucking idea what we're talking about very definitely need to see this week's
Download column to catch up on the influential-est -- and soon to be ex-est -- DJ who white hipsters would recognize on the street and Southern thugs would dance to. Many many thanks to
Catchdini and
Rory Them Finest for the last-minute photos.
DJ C: eyes wide shut2.
M.I.A. has taken a shine to Boston bounce:
Beat Research's DJ C coined the new genre, and he's used it to land an official "URAQT" remix that's coming out on XL. There's also an RSVP-only Boston Bounce party on September 7 in JP,
check over here for details on how to get in. No empeefrees (yet). If there's demand, we'll bug DJ C for something we can share with y'all: would love to get a quickie five-minute megamix or something. We'll see. We've heard some material that might end up on the Beat Research/Boston Bounce 12-inch, and it's fire. In the meantime (and this thing deserves its own post but whatever) DJ C has posted a crash-course-in-Baltimore-Club mix (and even better a
TRACK LIST!) that you should keep in your back pocket. Shit's like a respirator for your ass.

3. We hump this shit every month, but for chrissake this one's extra-super-awesome: back-to-school edition of
Lemon-Red Mix Series is by none other than his "favorite DJs on earth"
Caps + Jones, and people
are already losing their shit over it. Especially their blend-of-2005: B-more club kid Spankrock's booty-tech assault "Put That Pussy On Me" into the current Triple-Six smash "Stay Fly" with a touch of "Smack My Bitch Up" totally slays. But so does shit like their fluttery Aerozeppelinwings edit -- these are the (levee) breaks? -- and Sabbath/Jeezy blend and opening up with
Nextel Chirp, just because.
Also-est, the 33-minute mp3 mix (a Lemon-Red standard) is way far superior to the hour-long jawns DJs want to drop like it's a headlining gig or a radio slot. Since it's shorter it makes dudes get to the point, but more importantly it's like perfect subway-ride length: cue it up at North Station and that MC Luscious/Roxy Music blend is kicking in just as we're walking outta Kenmore.
