Beast is come to claim the youth

2. We have often told people that Samhain's "Archangel" is one of the greatest songs by America's most overlooked songwriter (overlooked, that is, by people without Misfits shirts in their wardrobe). It's all about the way Danzig co-opts and subverts the conventions of doo wop (not to mention the Bible) by simultaneously paying tribute to and sending up his dirty-Jerz roots. With the opening line, "Heaven sent me here to you," he sets you up for one of those chaste, hand-holding ballads like the Penguins' "Earth Angel" (to which "Archangel" is the luciferian answer song, obv.). But then he completes the couplet with one of the great all-time punchlines in popular song: "And if you fear, you've reason to." If asked to sum up what Glenn Danzig's songs are about, I'd give you those 13 (count 'em) words.

Over the next 20 years, Danzig tried again and again, with diminishingly silly results, to express his contempt for the church, and to explain his darkness as a reflection of the very doctrine that seems to have scarred him, but in terms of teenage symphonies to Satan, neither he nor anyone else ever topped "Archangel." All of this is our way of giving a huge shout-out to Buddyhead, who ran things even before they got into the blog game, but have been posting some serious tracks on the regular: it's basically music school for metal ingrates. And they just unearthed one of the holy grails of Danzig lore: the original demo of Archangel recorded by the Misfits back when Glenn wrote it for Dave Vanian of the Damned. Good looking out, broheim.

3. We went looking to see if anyone was silly enough to blog the new Franz Ferdinand single, and sure enough, those Scenestars kids are working overtime to keep that 99 cents in your pocket and out of Steve Jobs'.
