Lenny & the Piss Poor Boys photo by Camille
The Abbey Lounge isn’t really our scene, but a Somervillian undertow must've been in full effect on Saturday, pulling us there to chill with the Schlitz cans, Noise caricatures, and half-nude vixen drawings. The event was “Very Bad Girls: The Art of Jordan Valentine,” an opening art reception of rock-poster illustrations drawn by a wigged-out chorus-girl for the flamboyant Hairspray-style choir Valhalla Kittens. On the night’s bill were names from Valentine's wall placards, including Eli “Paperboy” Reed and the True Loves, an “Acousticelticore” collective called the Gobshites, and the country-fried punk of Darkbuster's Lenny Lemaster, Lenny & the Piss Poor Boys. Highlights:
- Patrick, a two-fisted-drinking septuagenarian who brought along his own pitcher of Mint Julips (mint still in the grocery-store package) in honor of the Kentucky Derby.
- When Lenny & the Boyz hit the stage, they opened by harmonizing “Stinkbomb,” probably describing an earlier act we won’t call out by name.
- The Gobshites's string player, a grey-haired gym-teacher-type decked out in a leather vest and VIOLIN SLUT T-shirt.
