And the Campaign Begins

And they're off.

The Rhode Island Democratic Party fired an opening volley in the 2012 Congressional races today when it released a statement attacking GOP Congressional candidate Brendan Doherty for asking former Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri to headline a fundraiser:

Less than two months since announcing his bid for U.S. Congress, Brendan Doherty has already joined with far-right former Governor Don Carcieri in order to secure campaign cash. Last year, Carcieri was ranked as one of the 11 worst governors in the country by the nonpartisan Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. When he left office Rhode Island had the fifth-highest unemployment rate in the country (hovering close to twelve percent) and a massive budget shortfall.  While over 30,000 jobs were lost during his tenure, Carcieri, like the current Republicans in Washington, choose (sic) to focus on far-right social issues instead of getting Rhode Islanders back to work.

Count this as among the first of many efforts to align the Republican candidates with, well, Republicans; to turn a campaign that might focus heavily on incumbent Congressman David Cicilline's track record as Providence mayor into one focused on ideological and partisan concerns.
