I've been thinking about the future of media in Rhode Island for a piece I'm writing this week. And one big hole in the local fabric is a nonprofit, on-line news operation. There are plenty of intriguing models around the country: MinnPost, Voice of San Diego, and the St. Louis Beacon, among them.
But today, I came across a model that seems like a good fit for politics-obsessed Rhode Island. It's in the next state over and it's called the Connecticut Mirror - a down-the-middle, politics-focused site staffed by veterans of the Hartford Courant, among others.
The Mirror, like many of these sites, has some solid seed funding. The challenge is making these things sustainable in the long-term.
But first things first: anyone know a wealthy philanthropist who wants to shake up the State House?
