Providence Journal sources say reporter Phil Marcelo, who covers the city of Providence, will fill the vacancy in the paper's three-member State House bureau.
The slot has been open since former ProJo scribe Steve Peoples left the paper to join Washington-based political publication Roll Call in July.
The bureau, one of the most demanding outposts at the paper, has traditionally been a site of rapid turnover. And it has served as a springboard to other high-profile jobs - within the paper and without. Several months before Peoples left for Roll Call, reporter Cynthia Needham stepped away from the bureau to become the paper's chief economic correspondent. She has since moved over to ProJo's PolitiFact operation.
Longtime bureau chief Kathy Gregg and reporter Randal Edgar, who replaced Needham on Smith Hill, round out the State House staff.
