Chafee's Union Play

Independent gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee is holding a press conference this afternoon in front of Central Falls High School. He'll call on the school district and teachers' union to engage a third-party mediator to resolve an emotional dispute over plans to fire the school's staff in a bid for a turnaround.

This is a good bit of politics: it emphasizes Chafee's bid for a get-it-done third way (substitute the district and union for the Republicans and Democrats) and, at the same time, it's a not-too-subtle play for union support. Any sort of mediated solution would, of course, avoid the firings.
