Patrick Lynch's campaign issued a press release this morning titled "Caprio to Run as a Republican?," which cites a radio interview with John Dodenhoff, former campaign manager for Steve Laffey, suggesting that a Frank Caprio campaign representative approached him about running as a Republican.
The press release goes on to suggest that Caprio is too conservative for the Democratic Party. Margie O'Brien, a spokeswoman for the Caprio campaign, says "Frank has authorized no such conversation." And she says Caprio is running as a Democrat.
Lynch is working aggressively, in the early going, to define his opponent as out of the Democratic mainstream. And the strategy could work if the primary shapes up as a typical Democratic primary, defined by traditional Democratic constituencies. Caprio, for his part, seems to be playing a game of rope-a-dope - hoping that his steady-as-he-goes campaign will be able to tap the moderates and independents who have shown increasing political strength in the state.
