Sawyer, Gender and TV

Charlie Gibson, who performed admirably in his role as ABC's "World News" after Peter Jennings, has announced that he will leave at the end of the year, clearing the way for Diane Sawyer to take over as anchor.

With Katie Couric already in place, that means two of the Big Three anchors will be women - heralding a new era for a national broadcast that has long lagged behind the local news when it comes to gender.

And more broadly, the move signals a nation willing to accept a voice of authority that is not white and male. We saw it with the last presidential election. We are seeing it here.
