Senate President's Husband Dies

Tragedy has struck the General Assembly again. Just two weeks after State Rep. Thomas Slater died of cancer, Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed's husband has died. From the Projo:

Mark Weed, the longtime husband of Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed died Saturday at the age of 50, after a battle with cancer.

On the January day she was sworn in, Paiva Weed's husband stood beside her and held the Bible as his wife took the oath that made her presidency official.

It was, the new Senate president said at the time, their goal together to see that day happen.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Senate President Paiva Weed and her family at this difficult time," House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox said this afternoon.

Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, D-Providence, said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with our dear friend Teresa and the Weed family today, as the entire Senate family grieves alongside them for the loss of our friend Mark. While this is a day of profound sadness, let us take comfort in the many wonderful memories we have shared with Mark over the years, knowing that he will remain forever in our hearts."

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport.

A spokesman for Paiva Weed said it was unclear whether Weed's death will alter the legislature's plan to return to session in early September, possibly as soon as next week.
