Big Wind and Little Wind

In today's Phoenix, I have a cover story on Rhode Island's push for a large, offshore wind farm and the hype surrounding it: could the $1.5 billion project create a new Silicon Valley for renewable energy at Quonset Point or will Rhody's grand plans fizzle?

One angle that didn't land in print: some environmentalists and lefty legislators say the Carcieri Administration, to be lauded for its big wind push, has not placed enough emphasis on smaller, land-based renewable energy projects that can win quicker approval and get Rhode Island moving away from its dependence on fossil fuels.

It's an interesting debate: the value of focusing limited time and money and political capital on a big project versus the value of a broad-based, steady progress. We'll be watching to see how the next governor comes out on this.
