"BriTunes?" Come on, BriTunes?
I'm all for Providence's own Deer Tick getting some love in the mainstream media. David Fricke of Rolling Stone recently gave the band, once described in the Phoenix as purveyors of "whiskey-fueled, rock-tinged, tall-grass country," a nice little boost when he named the outfit the breakthrough act of the SXSW music festival in Austin, Tex.
But whatever indie-rock credibility NBC news anchor Brian Williams could claim, and that's not much, whatever hipster quotient he hoped to sieze with his new web-based interviews of musicians - starting with Deer Tick - took a plunge when the marketing geniuses at NBC came up with the name for the segment: BriTunes.
Come on, BriTunes? Really? Even the Bri-guy himself seemed to distance himself with a little blog missive suggesting that he hadn't come up with the name. My God. Note to all you old media types trying to make a run at the new media: put your 20-year-old intern in charge of the thing. Please.
