This is a timely event times two -- Kearns Goodwin is both a presidential historian and a big Red Sox fan.
The 2008 U.S. presidential election is heating up, and its results will forever change the modern American political landscape. As Election Day approaches, Roger Williams University will host Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, who will present a timely examination of the current and past American presidential campaigns to the University community and general public.
Ms. Goodwin will visit RWU as part of its Civil Discourse lecture series on Thursday, October 9, to share her expertise on how presidential campaigns have evolved into the no-holds-barred competitions we witness now. “The American Presidency” is the theme for this fall’s Civil Discourse series. . . .
In addition to being a noted presidential historian, Ms. Goodwin has reported on politics and baseball for more than two decades. Author of several best-selling books, she won the Pulitzer Prize for “No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.”
An equally gifted historian and storyteller, Ms. Goodwin illustrates lessons in leadership relevant to today’s issues and headlines from some of the country’s greatest figures. She is a commentator for NBC, and a consultant and on-air expert for PBS documentaries on Lyndon B. Johnson, the Kennedy Family, Franklin Roosevelt and Ken Burns’ “The History of Baseball.” She was also the first female journalist to enter the Boston Red Sox locker room.
The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the University’s Recreation Center Gymnasium on the Bristol Campus at One Old Ferry Road. The event is free, and limited tickets are available to the public. For more information or to reserve a ticket, call (401) 254-3067.
