Darrell West's successor chosen at Brown

Marion Orr, a political science professor and expert in urban politics, has been chosen as the new director of Brown University's Taubman Center for Public Policy, the university announced today.

Orr succeeds longtime director and pollster Darrell West, who is leaving Brown on July 1 to become vice president of the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C., think tank.

Orr, who received a doctorate from the University of Maryland, is now the Fred Lippitt professor of public policy at Brown. He has taught courses and done research in urban politics, urban educational policy, African American politics and urban poverty. He has written books on urban politics and school reform and has won numerous awards for his writing and research.

Orr has also served as interim chairman of the Brown political science department and director of the university's graduate studies program in political science. He previously taught at Duke University. He also was a frellow at the University of California at Berkeley.
