Committee races highlight RI GOP convention

 elephant fight

Topping the bill for tomorrow night's RI GOP convention is the three-way Manning-Avedisian-Trillo race for GOP National Committeeman, a story that I broke here.

And since the confab is going down in Lincoln, will the ubiquitous Pat Crowley crash the party?

Here's the word from the GOP:

The Rhode Island Republican Party will hold its election year Convention this Thursday, June 12th at the Kirkbrae Country Club, 197 Old Country Road, Lincoln, starting at 7:00 PM. Media wishing to cover the Convention should contact Donna Perry at the RIGOP office in advance of Thursday evening.

The Party will be voting on candidates for slots for National Committeewoman and National Committeeman. The slots provide membership to the Republican National Committee in Washington, DC.

There are five female candidates vying for National Committeewoman and three male candidates vying for National Committeeman. The female who prevails will replace Eileen Slocum of Newport who has held the post since 1992, but served on various committees to the national Republican Party since the 1970’s.

“Eileen Slocum has served this Party, both in the state and nationally, with extraordinary vigor, passion and tireless enthusiasm for many, many years and she leaves incredibly big shoes to fill,” Cicione says.

"The Party and legions of candidates over the years have benefited enormously from her generosity, which included her hosting countless events at her historic and beautiful Bellevue Avenue home. We will be forever in gratitude to Eileen and her unrivaled enthusiasm for our Party.”

Candidates for the National Committeewoman slot include:

Christina Harsch of Jamestown, vice chair of the Jamestown Republican Town Committee; Patricia Morgan of West Warwick, former Party Chairwoman; House Rep. Carol Mumford, District 41, Scituate; Martha Stamp of Wakefield, a member of the RI Republican Assemblies organization; and Norma Willis of Jamestown, a former Party Chair and former House rep, and member of the Federation of Republican Women, RI chapter. The term for the National Committeewoman slot begins with this year’s 2008 Republican National Convention and runs through 2012.
