Post-Papitto panel planned on race + education

In the aftermath of the Papitto controversy, law students at Roger Williams University hope to help organize a fall semester symposium on race and education.

Law student Matt Jerzyk, one of the leaders in the effort to remove Papitto's name (and a Phoenix contributor) tells me, "We want to create a forum where law students and interested faculty can discuss what happened in a larger context."

After student activists showed that Papitto's use of the N-word was not representative of the university, Jerzyk says, "Now we want to intellectually debate" some of the related policy questions -- like the US Supreme Court's ruling last month that race can't be a factor in the assignment of students to public schools.

Jerzyk says a variety of liberal and conservative perspectives will be sought for the symposium.
