Three years ago, the Phoenix's Steve Stycos reported on how police tactics threatened to put free speech and assembly rights on the line during the Democratic and Republican national conventions in Boston and New York. (Anyone who made it to Boston had to be troubled by, if nothing else, the designated "protest pen" for dissenters.)

More recently, the New York Times reported on how the NYC police spied broadly before that city's 2004 RNC.

Now, as the paper has revealed, alt-cartoonist Ted Rall was among those under police scrutiny.
