Globe stirs the mayoral pot; plus, Peter Meade speaks!

Since I recently kvetched about the Globe not covering Boston politics enough, I'd like to personally thank the paper for today's front-page story on three possible challengers to Mayor Tom Menino. Keep 'em coming!

I do have a question for city councilor Michael Flaherty, one of the aforementioned three: when you say, "My decision will be reached by listening to residents, not rumors," what exactly do you mean? Are you taking a potshot at the press? Allying yourself with regular people instead of Boston's political elite? Doing a Tom Menino impression? I'm confused.

Finally, a related update. The Globe's story, by reporter Stephanie Ebbert, included Blue Cross Blue Shield VP Peter Meade in a broader group of people who might be interested in running if Menino doesn't. But this afternoon, Meade--who didn't comment for the original piece--emailed various local media types to announce his non-candidacy. Said Meade:
There have been a couple of articles suggesting that under some circumstances I would be a candidate for Mayor of Boston. Under no circumstance will I be a candidate for Mayor of Boston. To paraphrase Mr. Udall [,] “[I]f nominated I will flee to Dingle (County Kerry); if elected I will fight extradition."
(He's talking about Mo Udall, FYI.)
