Patriot Ledger exits State House
[NOTE: This report seems to have been erroneous; see my correction here.]
Today the Globe reported that GateHouse Media--which owns the Patriot Ledger, the (Brockton) Enterprise, and a bunch of small weeklies--is cutting 60 jobs here in Massachusetts.
A point the Globe didn't mention: one of these cuts will eliminate the Patriot Ledger's one-person State House bureau. DQM hears that Beacon Hill reporter Tom Benner is among the casualties, and that his position won't be filled. (Carolyn* Ryan, the former Globe metro editor who's now with the Times, is one of Benner's predecessors.)
Benner declined comment for this piece, and Rick Daniels, the head of GateHouse Media New England, didn't return my call. So I'll close by noting that ending daily South Shore-focused political coverage seems like an odd move, given GateHouse's "Wicked Local" catchphrase.
*Not "Caroline," as I originally wrote, much to my chagrin. Also, Carolyn was the Herald's State House editor chief before heading to Morrissey Blvd.
