WSJ gets unsexy again

Last Friday, eagle-eyed blogger Paul Karl Lukacs noted that that day's Wall Street Journal was strikingly easy on the eyes--at least for some readers. But was the Feb. 1 Journal a portent of sweeping change or just an anomaly?

This week's Journals suggest the latter. Thematically speaking, the lad-maggiest part of yesterday's paper was this uplifting tale of an Argentinian trash-scavenger-turned-fashion model. But the model in question only got a tiny, non-salacious pic on A8.

Today, meanwhile, there's no comparable story. And there's just one semi-superfluous photo of a fetching female. (It accompanies a C1 story on Microsoft's Yahoo bid.)

In sum: Rupert Murdoch may well plan to tart up the Journal. But if he does, he's got a long way to go.

Rupert didn't get that rich by being stupid. He knows his readers. One color picture does not a lad-mag make. I would suggest that finding any possible connection to his more down-market products is in itself sexist. If an attractive woman is disqualified from photo coverage, journos could be in for a long four years if McCain is somehow elected.
