Praise for Ballou

The big challenge for journalists covering murders in predominantly minority parts of Boston--i.e., murders in Boston--is finding a way to make them seem as tragic as they are, even when the public might be inclined to succumb to compassion fatigue.

So kudos to the Globe's Brian Ballou, who does just that in today's story on Luis Gerena. Granted, when a 13-year-old is shot to death, it's going to hit the general public harder than when a 23-year-old dies. That said, Ballou's piece is extremely well done; it's poignant but not maudlin or manipulative. Read it if you haven't.
