HOT HEMLINES: Midis and Maxis

Common sense says the hotter the temperature, the higher the hemline. But the spring runways didn't play by the rules, ditching the short and tight looks of past seasons in favor of long and loose silhouettes. From the soft, sheer, pleated midis at Chloé to the bold, peplum-adorned maxis at Jil Sander, the long skirt has no limits. If you're not ready to hit the floor just yet, midi skirts at Madewell (329 Newbury Street, Boston, 617.424.0904) fall just under the knee - try the chambray button-up style with a loose tank and fedora for a picnic-perfect outfit. For a dose of come-hither cool, browse the Helmut Lang options at The Tannery (711 Boylston Street, Boston, 617.267.5500), whose floor-grazers come in shades of gray with thigh-high slits. And if you're feeling extra bold (or are a couple drinks in - we won't judge), head to American Apparel (330 Newbury Street, Boston, 617.236.1636) for sheer chiffon maxis in every color of the rainbow and then some. Wear over bloomers or a bandage skirt for a trompe l'oeil effect that would make Dalí look twice. We're not the type to discriminate by size, but when it comes to summer skirts, length matters.
